Wharekauhau is a remote rural property of over 5,000 acres on the south east cast of the North Island of New Zealand. Ten minutes travel from Wellington by helicopter or one and a half hours by road, the property runs between the Rimutaka Mountains in the west and the wild seclusion of Palliser Bay on its eastern boundary. With its private native forests, spectacular beach, rivers, lakes and wetlands, Wharekauhau is a magical haven of peace and solitude from the outside world.
Wharekauhau started life as a sprawling pioneer sheep station in the 1840s. Today it is still a working sheep station and New Zealand's second oldest Romney stud and a place once described as one of the most spectacular farms on earth.
In the hectic and demanding age we live in, the opportunity to recapture the gracious lifestyle of a bygone era is a rarity. In the Grand Hall huge mullioned windows look out on views of breathtaking beauty while massive fireplaces throw out warmth and comfort from grates alive with blazing logs.
In the living room and hall, large comfortable sofas and deep chairs provide islands of luxury for meeting and talking or for private moments alone, just reading, writing a letter or merely enjoying one's own company with a favourite drink at hand.
Everywhere sumptuous furnishings, antiques, rich rugs, fine table ware, exquisite food, wine and sparkling company come together in a spirit of warm country hospitality.
Guest accommodation is provided in charming cottages located throughout the grounds, all within easy walking distance of the main house. Each cottage is placed to take full advantage of the magnificent ocean views. Even the names evoke their special relationship with the natural environment - names like Stormwatch and Wetlands.
Designed for solitude and comfort, the cottages house the private guest suites. Natural materials are employed widely throughout the suites and include clay tiles and distinctive pebble mosaics, hemp curtains and cotton bedsheets, warmly plastered walls and rich New Zealand wool carpeting. Each suite has a super king sized four poster canopied bed, open fireplace, under floor heating, deep comfortable sofas and chairs, a fully stocked bar, and separate dressing room with full length mirror.
In the evening, guests gather in the living room for cocktails and conversations about the day's events. As daylight fades and the talk becomes more lively, guests move to the dining room where tables are lavishly set for the start of a memorable meal prepared with the best and freshest local ingredients from sea and land.
For leisurely pursuits there is much to do around the lodge itself such as chess, backgammon, card games, a game of petanque perhaps, or croquet. There are also many beautiful walks. With 5,000 acres of private land including ancient forests, peaceful lakes, rivers, rolling pasture land and a wild and breathtaking coast, there is little shortage of choice when it comes to choosing a route. Slightly more active hiking expeditions are also available around coastal trails and into native bush areas.
Balance the luxurious relaxation of Wharekauhau's accommodation and enjoy a range of activities available. Work out in the fully equipped modern gymnasium, or after a few laps of the 20 metre indoor heated pool, relax poolside and take in the tranquility of the courtyard garden. For those still feeling active, a superb astro-turf tennis court awaits.
